The Simple and Pure Truth - Galatians 1:6-10

The Simple and Pure Truth

My children have a knack for finding ways to change the way something is done so that it better suits their needs or purpose. Have you ever been in a position and changed something, every so slightly, so that it was better for your agenda or better served your purpose? Even when you know, deep down, that what you are doing is wrong?

Do we do that with God's Word? Do we change things because it is more appealing and friendly to those around us? Are we watering down the truth of the Gospel?

Galatians 1:6-10
6 I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— 7 not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed. 9 As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed.
10 For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.

Instead of Paul’s typical thanksgiving, Paul immediately follows his greeting to the church of Galatia with incredible concern. We see the church is distorting the simple truth of the Gospel. The pure simplicity of Christ. Paul is stuck with a ‘sudden and overpowering’ surprise by what they are doing. Do we require more from people to earn their salvation? Are we emplacing barriers and informing people that Christ’s resurrection is not enough?

The Gospel of Jesus is UNCHANGING. No man or angel can change it. This is why we should be cautious when people come in and talk about good works, yet they are not founded on the simple truth of Christ. There may be other churches or religious groups that add requirements to salvation in Christ. Paul encourages us to remain steadfast in the truth, the simple truth that it is by grace we are saved and nothing else. It is a gift, and we cannot earn it. We just need to submit and open our hearts toreceive it. For we are justified by faith. Romans 10:10 “For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.”

We need to encourage each other, as brothers and sisters in Christ, to remain vigilant in the truth of and simplicity of the Gospel. Help each other along through discipleship and guidance through the Word. I encourage all of us to have a firm understanding of the what and the why we believe in Christ. The only way we can know of the the Truth of Christ is through reading more of God’s Word and having time with God through prayer. We are servants of Christ and cannot please both man and God.
